Community Action Africa (CAA), in collaboration with the University of Fort Hare, hosted a debating competition for high school pupils in the Cambridge Hall last week.
The annual debate is aimed at helping disadvantaged pupils to achieve their full academic potential and develop into confident individuals.
CAA director Musa Sebugwawo said the competition provided a platform for young people to learn and share ideas.
“The competition was organised as part of the learner support programme to support high school pupils from disadvantaged communities to improve their academic achievements in the learning areas of English, maths and science,” he said.
Schools participating in the debate included Alphendale High, Canaan Academy, Cambridge High, East London High, Ebenezer Majombozi High and Kusile Comprehensive School.
Cambridge were the winners, with Alphendale coming second.
Cambridge head of debating Claire Gawler said the school was absolutely delighted with the success of the team comprising Vanessa Annan, Asivile Loki and Daniel Rothmann.
“They displayed remarkable teamwork, a cool head and a never-back-down attitude” said Gawler.
Sebugwawo said: “There are various skills that are learnt through public speaking and debating.
“These include research, public speaking, presentation and time management.”
The winning team received Movies@Hemingways 3D vouchers, popcorn and drinks vouchers, RJ’s Steakhouse food vouchers and Electric Avenue game vouchers.
