A group of prisoners have broken out of the Johannesburg Correctional Centre‚ also known as Sun City prison‚ officials said on Monday.
Department spokesperson Singabakho Nxumalo said the escape happened in the early hours of the morning.
“We think it happened at around 3am this morning‚” he said.
TimesLIVE was informed that around 20 prisoners had escaped‚ but Nxumalo said he could not immediately confirm the number. It was also not yet clear how the prisoners had escaped.
Nxumalo told TimesLIVE that he was on the way to the scene and would later provide further details.
