Thozamile Gawula on Monday pleaded guilty to attempted murder after he attacked his former girlfriend with an iron in 2016.
In a statement read out by his legal representative, Gawula acknowledged his offence and said he regretted his actions.
He appeared at the Mthatha Magistrate’s Court.
His girlfriend, Mihle Sibembe, was burnt with a hot iron on her face, stomach, thighs and hands and left for dead. She had to be admitted to Mthatha General Hospital.
Sibembe was reportedly burnt by her 30-year-old boyfriend, Gawula, in a fit of jealousy after he saw an old picture of her and a male University of Fort Hare student on Facebook.
