Workers, including nurses are continuing with the stayaway at the Lusikisiki-based St Elizabeth Hospital.

On Thursday workers downed tools after their union leaders were arrested for contempt of court.

They allegedly held a meeting within the hospital premises despite the court order prohibiting any form of staff gathering.

In solidarity, nurses left their working stations and marched to Lusikisiki Police Station to demand the release of their fellow employees.

Speaking to DispatchLive this morning Nehawu chairman at the hospital Nkosinathi Mkhumbuzi said all workers have been gathered outside the gates of the hospital since 6am.

He said workers say they will only return to work when the hospital CEO Mzingisi Tshaka has been removed.

“Workers have made it clear that they will not go until such time Tshaka is not in charge of the hospital,” he said.

Workers are demanding the removal of Tshaka accusing him among other things of refusing to recognise the union at the hospital.

On Thursday patients were left stranded until the management stepped in to assist with clinical duties together with “skeleton staff”
