South African snow watchers woke on Tuesday to a winter wonderland along the Drakensberg mountain range‚ stretching through to neighbouring Lesotho.
Light snow fell in the Sani Pass region — between the Drakensberg and the mountain kingdom — on Saturday. Late on Monday‚ Snow Report SA announced on its social media platforms that “it seems the season has well and truly started!“.
It predicted that the snowfall would intensify in the early hours of Tuesday. “We expect intermittent flurries throughout the day Tuesday.”
The cold snap also stretched its tentacles inland with Johannesburg waking up to a chilly 5°C morning; the city was not expected to be warmer than 19°C on Tuesday. It was even colder in parts of the Free State. Bloemfontein had a duvet-hugging low of 3°C.
The South African Weather Service said there would be widespread showers and thundershowers over parts of the country including the Free State‚ Limpopo‚ North West‚ Gauteng‚ Mpumalanga and KwaZulu-Natal until Wednesday. There is a risk of heavy rain in Limpopo and KwaZulu-Natal.
Pictures of icy rooftops‚ snow-covered landscapes and ice-capped mountains in the Sani Pass area were posted to Snow Report SA’s Facebook page on Tuesday.
“Over the mountainous regions‚ ending late in the evening. Keep warm and should you travel to experience the snow please respect private property and stay safe at all times‚“ it warned snow watchers.
Snow Report SA’s Rob Ansell told TimesLive: “We’ve got about 5 to 7cm of snow lying at the top of Sani Pass at the moment. The snow stopped about an hour ago. There are some ominous-looking clouds still‚ so we could get a flurry or two through the morning.”
Cape Town was heading for a sunny 23°C day on Tuesday and Port Elizabeth 22°C.
