Security guards accused of assaulting WSU student

Walter Sisulu University has strongly condemned an incident in which a student was allegedly assaulted by security guards at the Mthatha campus.

Thobekile Tshesi, a second year BCom Economics student at the Nelson Mandela Drive campus, sustained injuries after he was allegedly beaten up by two security guards this afternoon.

Tshesi said he was talking to a fellow student when a security guards accused him of making noise.

“A second security guard came and started assaulting me,” he said.

University spokeswoman Yonela Tukwayo said the behaviour was completely unacceptable and was condemned by management.

“We have already called for the immediate suspension of the security guard by his employer, Fidelity. We have requested that proper disciplinary measures must be followed against the security guard,” she said.

Tukwayo said the university would engage Fidelity about possible compensation for the student.
