Students who failed to apply to study at university can use the Department of Higher Education and Training’s central applications clearing house, essentially an online portal.

The DHET says students will see there which universities still have places available.

Universities SA (USA) has warned students to not pitch up at universities and apply.

Yesterday during an inter-ministerial press briefing in Johannesburg DHET Minister Hlengiwe Mkhize said students should understand that the universities had independent processes from the department and they should follow the application processes of each university.

USA CEO Ahmed Bawa said in a statement applications to all 26 universities had closed towards the end of 2017. No “walk-in” applications would be accepted.

“Universities should abide by their enrolment plans and targets which are agreed between each university and the DHET.”

He said there was no clarity on what to do about first year students who didn’t previously qualify for financial aid but who now did qualify under the new NSFAS dispensation.
