PE STARS walloped Future Tigers 5-1 in an exciting ABC Motsepe League clash at Ginsberg Stadium at the weekend.

A rampant Stars taunted Tigers in their own den, earning three points to take them to second position on the log, with 27 points.

Future Tigers remain in sixth position on the log, with 20 points.

Stars assistant coach and head of football, Moenier Safedien, was overjoyed with his team’s performance.

“We deserved the victory because our preparations were 100 percent,” he said.

“We were ready for this game and that showed from the start, and we took advantage of that. The problem we’ve been having is scoring goals, and I’m glad that it all came together because we were scoring today.

“The guys had a week’s break and we gave them a programme and they followed it, and I was actually surprised when they came back because we could tell they put in the effort from their fitness.”

He said the win was the confidence boost they had been looking for, and going forward their mission was to win all their games.

Safedien was also excited about the upfront combination of Revaldo Erso and Vernon Camfour, who scored three goals.

“This coming week we’ve got EC Bees at home, so we have had good preparation for the new year and the guys are in a good, confident mood.

“Revaldo Erso is very young, he’s quick at holding the ball and can create goals, and plus he can score. We’ve been joking with him, telling him that he’s only scoring at home – so finally he’s starting to score away as well, which is good for the team.

“Same with Camfour – he’s been missing a lot of chances for us, and I’m glad today he did a great job scoring those goals.”

Tigers caretaker coach Vuyo “George” Tyelo said the game was tough and Stars had them scratching their heads during the first half, but his players had tried to improve their performance in the second half.

He said the festive-season break had a negative impact on his players, who had not prepared for the game thoroughly. “We are still unfit. We didn’t get a chance to work as a team and prepare efficiently, but that’s not an excuse because all the teams were in a similar position.

“But let’s give credit to Stars. They played well, created chances and they took them.

“ We also had chances to come back into the game, but you could see our boys’ legs were not able to keep up. But we shall take things up a notch from now.”

Tyelo said his charges only started preparing for the game on Wednesday, and some of his regulars had not returned from the holiday break.

With two matches remaining in the first round, Tigers would aim to get into a better position on the log.

“We won’t let any team behind us steal any points from us and overtake us on the log.

“In these last two games we are going to play against teams who are behind us on the log, and they will remain behind us.”
