The Mdantsane woman who allegedly shot and killed her ex-husband before setting his girlfriend alight finally made it to court yesterday.

She could not be in the dock on two earlier occasions because she was in hospital recovering from burn wounds.

The 45-year-old Lebohang Mbola sustained the injuries in the December 27 petrol-fuelled attack she allegedly led.

Yesterday Mbola appeared to be still in pain when she took the stand in the bail court before Mdantsane Magistrate Nolundi Mkwali.

She faces two counts of murder for killing her husband, Themba Mbola, 50, and his girlfriend, known only as Andiswa. Mbola also faces a charge of arson after the house was gutted.

State prosecutor Ursula Campbell told the court the state would oppose bail due to the “severity” of the offence. Mkwali postponed the case to February 19 for formal bail application and Mbola was remanded in custody.

Lunga Mbola, brother to Themba, said Mbola and Themba were married for 16 years before she asked for a divorce in 2010.

He said the pair had three children together.

In a statement last month, police said Mbola stormed her former matrimonial home in NU14 with the assistance of two unknown men on December 27.

She was rushed to Cecilia Makhiwane Hospital in Mdantsane's NU9 with burns after she became trapped by the blaze.

The case had been postponed twice by the Mdantsane Magistrate’s Court because she was being treated in hospital.

She was under police guard.

The two men suspected of being her accomplices are still at large. — malibongwed@dispatch.co.za
