It remains unclear when the academic year at University of Fort Hare’s East London campus will resume.

Lectures were scheduled to resume on Monday, but students embarked on a stayaway over lack of accommodation.

In a statement issued by the SRC last night read in part, “no classes tomorrow. Let us all own the problem. Let all make sure that there are no classes”.

East London premier Kwanele Ntantala said they started engaging with the management regarding the accommodation since last year.

“The issue of residence was addressed by SRC several times last year, but until today there has been no implementation of the promises. As the SRC we wish to request all students to be in solidarity with these students by not going to classes until the issue is resolved,” he said.
