A total of 250 pupils from Ndamase senior secondary school in Buntingville village outside Ngqeleni are being treated for food poisoning at the Mthatha Regional and Nelson Mandela Hospitals.

According to provincial health spokesman Sizwe Kupelo, the pupils were vomiting and had stomach cramps and headache.

“They are being assessed by a team of clinicians to determine if they are in a life threatening situation or require admission. They are treated as mass casualty.”

Kupelo said Mthatha Regional casualty is already full, “and others are being taken to St Barnabas Hospital in Libode,” he said.

This is a developing story.
