Sanral in major boost for BCM interchanges

Buffalo City Metro will soon be home to one of the biggest interchanges in the province.

The South African National Roads Agency (Sanral) has allocated billions of rands for the construction of a state-of-the-art interchange at Breidbach in King William’s Town.

The contract has yet to go out to tender, so an exact figure has not been given.

City portfolio head for the infrastructure and engineering department Ncedo Kumbaca said the municipality was engaging those who would be affected by the project in the different wards of the metro.

“In essence there are two projects planned by Sanral in the King William’s Town area, the Breidbach interchange which is in Ward 44. The second will be the King William’s Town bypass which will run across four wards – 37, 38, 39 and 43,”said Kumbaca.

Ward 44 encompasses Breid-bach and surrounds, Ward 37 Westbank, Ward 38 Lower Mngqesha, Handsmission, Ward 39 Shorneville and Ginsberg and Ward 43 encompasses Tyutyu, and Bhisho.

Sanral community development Xoliswa Chubana said the road agency had met the municipality to outline the role of the municipality in the project and to facilitate stakeholder management. She said big projects such as these needed the involvement of the community.

“Sanral, together with the municipality, would need to appoint a project liaison officer (PLO) for the respective projects and set up a project liaison committee (PLC) for the duration of the projects.

“But firstly all that involves the councillors and the municipality. We have already introduced the design team to the municipality. The PLC set-up and appointment of PLO’s can follow hereafter,” said Chubana.

Sanral is currently at the design stage for upgrading a 60km stretch of the N2 from Green River to Buffalo River Bridge (3.2km) and the construction of the new Belstone (8.2km) and Breidbach (9.8km) interchanges.

The city said it welcomed the Sanral projects. — simthandilef@dispatch.co.za
