The East London Museum, which was established in 1921 and gained national acclaim with the discovery of the Coelacanth in 1938, will be opening on Saturdays starting this weekend.

“Thanks to co-operation from management and staff we have agreed to open again on Saturdays from 9am to 1pm. The coffee shop will also be open.

“We are very excited about this. We are proud of our museum and would like people to come see it. As public servants we should be offering a service to the public,” said Geraldine Morcom, museum director.

Entry fees will be R20 for adults, R15 for pensioners and R10 for children with Marcom saying that throughout the year there would be some open days when the public would be able to visit the museum for free benefiting “those who maybe couldn’t usually afford to ” such as from May 25-27 for the Umtiza Festival.

Morcom said that the museum opening on Saturdays would be great for families with “many lovely exhibits” for everyone to enjoy.
