Two murder accused ditch their bail bids

Two of the three men standing accused of brutally killing Elza Remant-Eyland, the owner of Thornycroft Lodge in Summerpride outside East London, today abandoned their bail application while the third one will know on Monday whether he will be granted bail or not.

The two suspects, Phumlani Mabaso,34, originally from KwaZulu-Natal (KZN), and one of the former workers at the lodge, Jannie Fagans,36, today made a brief appearance at the East London Magistrates Court where they withdrew their bail application citing no prospects of success.

Their case was then postponed to April 10 for further investigations, while they remain in custody.

However, their co-accused Bhekathini Msomi, 36, also originally from KZN, had his bail application postponed to Monday after court ran out of time during today’s hearing.

They were arrested on February 21 and were charged with murder, conspiracy to commit murder, robbery with aggravating circumstances and theft of cellphones and Remant-Eyland’s white Toyota bakkie which was later discovered in KZN.
