Government departments and private businesses can now save costs on overnight accommodation in Johannesburg, with the reintroduction by South African Express of an overnight flight to the East London Airport.

Airports Company South Africa (Acsa) spokeswoman Senzeni Ndebele said East London commuters had demanded a night return flight from Johannesburg.

“Due to popular demand from the business sector, SA Express have reintroduced the night-stop flight between East London and Johannesburg which, as before, will operate five days a week.

“The flight arrives at 8pm Sunday to Thursday as flight SA1411, and departs the following morning as flight SA1412 at 6.45am,” said Ndebele.

The new flight schedule came into effect on April 2.

“The obvious benefit to East London travellers is that they can now work late in Johannesburg and vice versa, and go to Johannesburg early in the morning without having to sleep over,” she said.

South African Express spokeswoman Refilwe Masemola confirmed they had received several requests to bring back the flights.

“As you know, SA Express exists to connect smaller cities to big commercial hubs such as Johannesburg, and this route has always been a strong performing route for the airline,” she said.

Border-Kei Chamber of Business president Les Holbrook said: “It’s fantastic that the flight has been reintroduced. It was a bad decision to have cancelled it from the onset, but we understand that the airline was experiencing operational constraints when they cancelled it.

“As the chamber we have engaged extensively with airliners to offer the late and morning flights, and South African Express has finally come to the party after an East London exporting company guaranteed freight for the airliner – a win-win situation for everyone.” — mbalit@dispatch.co.za
