28 pupils rushed to clinic with food poisoning

Twenty-eight pupils from Nombulelo Secondary School in Grahamstown were rushed to a local clinic after falling ill as a result of food poisoning.

This was confirmed by department of health spokesman Sizwe Kupelo.

He said the pupils had to receive medical attention after suffering diarrhoea, stomach cramps and vomiting from consuming meat prepared at the school.

This incident further raises the number of food poisoning cases to more than 600 pupils this year alone. In February, Daily Dispatch reported that 430 pupils from Ndamase Senior Secondary School suffered from a food poisoning spell.

In March, 96 pupils from Ngangelizwe High in Mthatha also had to be treated for food poisoning.

Kupelo said: "This calls for inspection of food suppliers and frequent checks on retailers and supermarkets. We still urge people to check expiry dates on the products they purchase."
