EC police arrest six for kidnapping and assault

Eastern Cape police have arrested six men who are accused of kidnapping after they assaulted two youngsters and later threw them over a cliff in Butterworth.

The assault allegedly happened in East London's Reeston area in March but the suspects were only arrested on Saturday. The two, who are presumed to have died after the assault, were apparently loaded in a vehicle before they were dumped at the village of Ngquthu near Butterworth.

East London police spokeswoman, Warrant Officer Hazel Mqala confirmed the arrest. “We can confirm the arrest of the six men who are accused of kidnapping. Police have learnt that the two victims were later thrown over a gorge and we are making that follow-up,” said Mqala.

Mqala said no case of murder has been opened against the suspects yet. “Only when the two victims are found dead will we  add an additional charge of murder but for now we are focusing on the kidnapping case,” said Mqala.

This is a developing story.
