Legendary Port Alfred surfer, surf school instructor and journalist David Macgregor, 55, has died.
Dr Jennifer Hodgskiss said his body, covered in a blue blanket, was seen surrounded by paramedics and surfers at water’s edge at Kelly Beach after 5pm on Monday.
Surfers left the water and were gathered in groups. A younger surfer was being consoled by a woman.
Details were not clear, but it was said at the edge of the crowd that a heart attack was suspected.
The mother of his two sons, Jill, confirmed his passing, posting that he died "doing what he loved, surfing at his beloved Port Alfred".
