Airport project in final stages

Mthatha residents’ wish for cheaper flights could be realised if plans by the provincial government to attract more airlines there are brought to fruition.

“We will design an exhibition that talks about the eastern side of the province as a gateway.”

The NHC plan’s to boost tourism in the area would include the training of tour guides. It would hold talks with King Sabata Dalindyebo municipal officials about the state of roads there.

Professor Somadoda Fikeni, who has been a leading force on the airport renewal committee, said the completion of Mthatha Airport was “like a phoenix rising from ashes”.

“It shows that when government and civil society work together in this country nothing can stop us. The road was long and frustrating. At times there was a lot of misunderstanding. That doesn’t matter now; what is most important is the end result.”

He said bringing in more airlines would be of great help for people who could not afford to fly as competition would drive ticket prices down.

Masualle said: “Through the airport we will be able to bring other types of investments. I think the potential we have in this area is massive. Government is doing what it should do. It is up to the private sector to come to the party.” — abongilem@dispatch.co.za
