Another tragedy for Nonkonyana royals

The Nonkonyana royal family, which has seen many relatives die violent or tragic deaths, will again lay another loved one to rest tomorrow.

Nceba Nonkonyana, 35, was stabbed to death last Saturday, allegedly by his uncle Fikile Nonkonyana, in a drunken altercation.

Fikile, who acted as chief and head of the Bhala Traditional Council when Contralesa provincial chairman Chief Mwelo Nonkonyana served as ANC MP in parliament, was arrested last Sunday.

He appeared in the Flagstaff Magistrate’s Court on a charge of murder on Tuesday and was remanded in custody until his next court appearance.

The death comes barely six months after Mwelo Nonkonyana buried his lawyer son, whose death involved alcohol abuse and stabbing.

A devastated Nonkonyana has denounced the tragic and violent deaths that have befallen family members.

“It is not only the tragic deaths, but also alcohol abuse which always features strongly in most of these deaths. Now, we have to bury our nephew, who has been killed by one of his uncles following a liquor-related quarrel,” he said.

Nceba was the only child of the late Princess Nokuzola Nonkonyana.

Contralesa and the Eastern Cape House of Traditional Leaders have conveyed messages of condolences to the bereaved family.

The Nonkonyanas have suffered a string of tragic deaths in the family, including that of Chief Mwelo’s son, Prince Bulumnko Nonkonyana.

Bulumnko, a practising attorney in Mthatha, was stabbed to death near a tavern where he had been drinking near the train station in Mthatha on September 26 last year.

During his funeral, Mwelo, who is also a practising high court advocate, spoke out against alcohol abuse and urged young royals not to use it because it not only destroyed families but affected traditional leadership.

Regarding Nceba’s death, Mwelo said: “Preliminary investigations have revealed that the killing of Nceba started at an illegal shebeen in the area, which apparently belongs to an extended family member, after a drunken altercation. The incident has the potential of dividing the family.”

He is expected to announce steps to curb drunkenness and violence at the funeral at Lundini Royal Place near Flagstaff. — lulamilef@dispatch.co.za
