A bus was burnt to a shell on a deadly weekend in which two separate smashes claimed five lives and injured 23.

Yesterday morning the Greyhound bus collided head-on with a VW Golf on the N2 near Lurhasini Village 22km outside Mthatha. The two vehicles caught fire.

“The driver of the Golf was burnt beyond recognition. Only two of the 32 bus occupants were slightly injured,” said Arrive Alive spokesman Tshepo Machaea.

Machaea said the bus was travelling towards Mthatha, and had come from Johannesburg via Kokstad.

“One lane was closed for about an hour while the emergency personnel were working on the road.”

Machaea said the bus drivers and other eyewitnesses said the VW golf was overtaking when it collided with the bus. It was dragged by the bus for more than 500m.

Machaea appealed to the public to help identify the deceased.

Four people were killed on the R396 between Tsolo and Maclear when a Hyundai LDV with 24 passengers overturned and plunged into the Zingcuka River.

Twenty-one people were critically injured. — lulamilef@dispatch.co.za
