THE angelic voices of two Gonubie Christian High School pupils have landed them a spot to compete in an international showcase in the United States.

Mihlali Sipayile and Jasmine Norris will be joining a group of South Africans chosen to attend the International Student Convention, which is for all Accelerated Christian Education (ACE) schools around the world.

It gives Christian school pupils a platform to showcase their talents in categories such as music, speech or drama, athletics, arts, and academics.

Mihlali and Jasmine won second place in the music category at the national level held in Bloemfontein in December last year.

The two 15-year-old girls chose I Surrender by Hillsong as their song for the competition.

“We were so nervous before our performance because there were other girls that could sing better than us and we did not think we stood a chance,” Mihlali said.

Their song not only saw them taking second place, but they were also among the group selected to attend the international convention.

“We chose I Surrender because it is the one song that we felt drew us close to God. We prayed before our performance and hoped for the best,” she said.

Mihlali said their results came out three days after their performance.

“When they announced that we had won second place, we were over the moon.

“This really showed us that God truly gives us the desires of our hearts,” she said.

Mihlali said she had always wanted to take part in a convention like this but never thought it would happen.

Last year Mihlali was one of the artists that were invited to perform at the Miss Eastern Cape beauty pageant.

“I love music and performing but I would like to pursue a career in business,” she said.

Mihlali said she would be hosting her own show before their trip in May. She said the event would feature a number of local gospel singers.

Norris, who is also a vocalist was unable to chat to the Dispatch due to other school commitments.

The South African group will be out of the country from May 20 to June 7. They are expected to visit a number of cities while there, including New Mexico, Arizona and California. — poliswap@dispatch.co.za
