Mdantsane roads upgrade project receives R7m boost

A BUFFALO City Metro (BCM) tender awarded to Down Touch Investments to upgrade Mdantsane gravel roads has been increased from R53-million to more than R60-million as more wards have been added to the project.

This was revealed by municipal manager Andile Fani when he called on metro residents to come forward and comment on the contract price amendment of more than R7million this week.

The R7-million has been added to finish phase two of the project, which covers 30km of gravel roads in wards 11, 20, 30, 48 and 50.

Fani stated in an advert that the contract had been amended due to additional costs that came with extending the work beyond NU7 but inclusive of wards 11, 20, 48 and 50.

Earlier this year BCM mayor Zukiswa Ncitha launched phase 1 of the project aimed at tarring 218km of gravel roads over a period of time in the township to address backlogs.

BCM spokesman Thandy Matebese said the additional R7-million was needed as the metro feared community unhappiness and unrest.

“As it was mentioned in the advert, the original scope of works was to be undertaken in one manageable area, Ward 30, but that had to be divided into five wards – 11, 20, 30, 48 and 50 – so as to avoid community unhappiness and unrest.”

He said this had added additional costs to the project.

The upgrade work in phase one was awarded to Mamlambo Construction, Down Touch and S C Contractors.

When the Daily Dispatch visited some of the wards yesterday phase one had been completed.

NU7 resident Buyiswa Maduna said: “We are very happy that finally the work has started. These roads were really bad. Vehicles could not even drive through our streets and in rainy weather we experienced the most difficulties.”

Maduna said they were now hoping that street lights would be erected to make the roads beautiful and safe.

Another resident from NU3 Irene Ngwane said: “It’s a good thing that they have added more money but we can only hope that it will be used for its purpose. The workers have cleaned our area, clearing bushes to make way for the new roads and so far their work has been good.”

All residents who would like to comment about the increased contract price can forward their comments to BCM’s Supply Chain Management Unit (SCM) at 80 Phillip Frame Road, Chiselhurst, East London, 5201. —
