Crime and drug infested school sets up task team

Pupils at an Eastern Cape high school are struggling to cope with their studies because of drug abuse.

Siyamthanda Camagu, a pupil at Ncedolwethu, says drug use and crime is so prevalent at the school that pupils are finding it difficult to focus on their studies.

"The problem is that some students are influenced badly by other students who don't come from stable backgrounds".

Camagu was speaking in the presence of the Deputy Minister of Police Maggie Sotyu, who was visiting the school this morning.

Sotyu was accompanied by the Deputy Minister of Water and Sanitation Pam Tshwete, who is the constituency officer of the area, as well as outgoing Eastern Cape police commissioner Lieutenant General Celiwe Binta.

Acting school principal Luyanda Hlasela said the problem was that students at the school took drugs and then terrorised the community. "These things really are not happening here at school but the ones committing these crimes are from the school," he said.

Sotyu and Tshwete called on the pupils to focus on their books. They created a special task team which included police, a parent, teacher and pupil. The team would solely work to uproot crime in the school.
