Design bash should be really Sick

Local clothing brands Sick wear, BOSSY and five others are going to show off their threads at the first East London “fashion Olympics” on May 1.

Mswenko Olympics, organised by Avukile Magaxeni and Luhle Dyonase, is essentially a fashion show, with a twist – it combines fashion, music and partying.

Besides the fabulous fashion, revellers will also be entertained by South African rapper Maggz and local hip hop acts such as Hasty, Mis Kon, 90’s in Mars and Jus Bangz.

Magaxeni said they were hoping to get more people aware of the local clothing brands and also build capital to improve their own label Araab Krazy.

“Araab Krazy is a clothing and lifestyle brand – we are young entrepreneurs from East London who saw the opportunity in the local fashion industry.

“Our clothing line is more than just a clothing brand. It’s a lifestyle brand which is also breaking into the entertainment industry in East London,” said Magaxeni.

He said they opted for this type of event because people were used to regular fashion shows and they had to come up with fresh ideas to get people aware and interested.

Magaxeni said they hosted a social event where people could be comfortable, have fun and become exposed to the brand.

“East London could use such an event to establish street clothing brands and with a mainstream hip hop artist to get more people interested.

“We are also promoting positivity among the youth in East London, a lot of people leave town because they say there’s not much here.

“We’re trying to vibe up East London.”

Magaxeni said Araab Krazy was started last year.

“It started out as just a phrase we used in our clique to express fun and crazy moments. Like when one of the guys did something awesome that we considered an achievement, instead of saying well done or ‘epic’, we said ‘that was Araab Krazy’.

“The phrase sounded marketable and original so we decided to start a clothing brand and it worked out,” he said.

Magaxeni said when they started, they focused on men’s clothing but “now we are confident to design clothing for guys and females for our winter edition”.

lMswenko Olympics will be held at the Pulse Nightclub in Arcadia on Friday May 1. Tickets cost R60 at Music Mix in Vincent Park but R100 at the door.
