An A-list of celebrities, including local talent, has been lined up for a music extravaganza to form part of celebrations marking Tourism Month activities across the province.

The Eastern Cape Parks and Tourism Agency (ECPTA) officially launched its programme for September at Nduli Nature Reserve near Mthatha on Tuesday.

September is dedicated to promoting South Africa as a prime tourist destination.

Not to be outdone, the ECPTA announced that a jazz festival, Heritage Day celebrations, 230km marathon between Mthatha and East London, new nature reserve, and cycling competitions would be part of the menu

Local musicians will raise the curtain with big stars such as legendary South African musician Sipho “Hotstix” Mabuse, kwaito legend Robbie Malinga, a cappella trio The Soil and Nai’ma Kay at the Mthatha Heritage Jazz festival.

The festival will be held at the Mthatha Sportsfield on September 26.

A heritage gala dinner will be held at the Nelson Mandela Museum on September 25.

Hundreds of athletes are expected to take part in the Nelson Mandela and Oliver Tambo marathon between East London and Mthatha via the N2 on September 27.

On September 22, sports, arts and culture MEC Pemmy Majodina will officially open Mhlontlo Nature Reserve in Tsitsa Falls near Qumbu.

Pupils from rural schools will also get their fair share of the tourism month celebrations when they take part in cycling competitions and debates along the R61 route.

It’s set to be a spring affair when the province’s diverse tribal groups in colourful traditional dress showcase their talent in arts and crafts, cuisine, beadwork and dance at Tsolo Junction for Heritage Day celebrations on September 24.

ECPTA chief marketing officer Nopasika Mxunyelwa said there would be regional launches during the first two weeks of September, with activities throughout the month.

“We warmly invite and encourage you to come to the launches so that we may spread the word for these activities and their benefit for the Eastern Cape communities.”

Mxunyelwa said the events were being hosted in conjunction with local municipalities in the OR Tambo and Joe Gqabi districts, as well as the Nelson Mandela Bay Metropolitan Municipality. The local municipalities include King Sabata Dalindyebo, Mhlontlo, Nyandeni, Port St Johns and Ingquza Hill.

“ECPTA, as an entity responsible for promoting tourism and conservation in the Eastern Cape, works closely with municipalities, trade and other tourism product owners for the sustainable development of the industry,” Mxunyelwa said.

The programmes for OR Tambo district municipality started on Monday at Nduli Nature Reserve, with addresses by OR Tambo mayor Khosi Meth and Mxunyelwa, who highlighted the importance of domestic tourism as an engine to boost the local economy.

Joe Gqabi District Municipality activities kick off today at the Lapeng Guest Farm in Aliwal North.

Nelson Mandela Bay’s municipality will launch its events on September 8.
