East Cape ANC to hear this week about deadline

The ANC’s national working committee (NWC) will announce later this week whether it will extend the deadline for Eastern Cape ANC branches to wrap up nominations for this year’s local elections.

ANC provincial secretary Oscar Mabuyane confirmed yesterday the provincial executive committee (PEC) made a submission to the NWC, which is sitting in the province this week, for the extension of the end-of-January deadline.

The party bosses set this deadline for all provinces to hold branch general meetings and nominate election candidates for ward councillors and proportional representation (PR).

But the ANC gave an instruction this time around that the process had to get blessings from public meetings.

“The process of nominating at branch level is time consuming on its own, but we have to hold public meetings to subject the nominees to public scrutiny. This is what caused the delays,” Mabuyane said.

“We have asked the national list committee to refer our appeal for an extension of the deadline to the NWC.

“We made our submission last Friday. The NWC is looking into it. We will hear from them soon, so we can wrap up this process and prepare for the manifesto launch thereafter.”

The party is contesting all 705 wards in the province.

Mabuyane said more than 600 branches have already held their BGMs, and that the only outstanding issue in a “few cases” were disputes and the endorsement of candidates through public gatherings.

All regions will then have to host list conferences where PR candidates’ lists will be reconciled before being tabled to the PEC for a stamp of approval.

After the PEC signs the list, it is then submitted to the ANC’s head-quarters as a final list of ANC candidates for the province for all municipalities and district ones.

The ANC announced last week that this year it will break away from tradition and announce its mayoral candidates for the metros, including Buffalo City, Nelson Mandela, Johannesburg, Tshwane and Cape Town before the election day.

ANC national spokesman Zizi Kodwa said they wanted this year’s election campaigns in all major cities to have faces to lead the campaign.
