Factory fire causes traffic problems in Mdantsane

BILLOWS of smoke from a massive fire at a Wilsonia recycling plant could be seen across East London Saturday afternoon as fire fighters battled to get the blaze under control.

By 6pm police were still fighting to put out the blaze. There was also uncertainty regarding what caused the fire

and whether anyone had been injured as a result of it. Buffalo City Metro fire department and the provincial disaster management team were on site trying to control the fire for over six hours at the time of posting this story.

Reports came in that the smoke was visible from as far away as Beacon Bay, and traffic on the Mdantsane Access Road was backed up in both directions as huge plumes of smoke reduced visibility on the road. Traffic officers were on duty on Saturday afternoon and directing traffic in an attempt to alleviate congestion.

Drivers were warned to drive with caution in that area, as it could be some time before the blaze would be put out.
