Families come forward, last victim unidentified

Seven of the eight victims of last week’s horror collision between two vehicles on the N6 near Queenstown have been identified.

Eight people died – five burnt beyond recognition – when a Toyota Avanza and a Hyundai minibus collided head-on last Monday.

Eastern Cape police and health authorities said the bodies were those of Luxolo Dweba, 27, driver of the Avanza, and his passengers Bulelani Ramoekipa, 30, of Ezibeleni near Queenstown; Xola Leo Ngaleka, 70, of Cofimvaba; Phumzile Jeffrey Mankayi of Molteno; Fundiswa Ntandiso, 49, of King William’s Town; and Zoliswa Mrhoali, 49, of King William’s Town.

The seventh body is that of Mxolisi Nkosemntu who was in the Hyundai minibus with seven of his colleagues. He was from Needs Camp in East London.

The Avanza had been travelling to King William’s Town and the minibus was transporting Avis car rental drivers to Queenstown at the time of the collision.

“We are still struggling with identifying the last victim but DNA samples have been extracted. The deceased is light in completion and he is of an height,” said Queenstown police spokesman Colonel Gcinikaya Taleni.

“Anyone wishing to identify the deceased should contact the Queenstown police station and we will arrange for identification.”

Health spokesman Sizwe Kupelo said the bodies of all those positively identified had already been handed over to their families.

Taleni said a case of culpable homicide was still under investigation. — zwangam@dispatch.co.za
