Fate of chief whip’s ex-lover to be decided by top brass

The fate of ANC legislature chief whip Mzoleli Mrara’s former mistress is now in the hands of the provincial ANC leadership.

ANC provincial secretary Oscar Mabuyane yesterday confirmed the party’s top brass, including provincial chairman and premier Phumulo Masualle, were now investigating how the mother of Mrara’s 10-year-old love child ended up working  in his office as ANC researcher at the legislature.

Mabuyane said the party’s top five including Masualle, his deputy Sakhumzi Somyo and party treasurer Thandiswa Marawu have already grilled Mrara to explain why his office had hired the woman despite claims of romantic links between them. Mabuyane said  Mrara told the meeting the only link between the two was the child as the romance was over.

This follows a Saturday Dispatch exposé a fortnight ago which revealed   the woman had been appointed at his office as one of three recruits with effect from June 1.

It was also reported  that the three holidayed in Cape Town last year with their flights and hotel allegedly paid by the legislature.

The appointment of another candidate was stalled after claims the woman submitted fraudulent qualifications for the researcher post.

Mrara, who doubles as SACP provincial chairman, yesterday revealed   the case of the questionable qualifications was now being handled by Hawks investigators.

The SACP, a party Mrara leads as its provincial chairman, has since instructed him to reverse the appointment, while Nehawu’s secretary in the legislature, Branton Jonas, yesterday issued a statement saying the union supported the SACP’s determination that the appointment be reversed.

Mabuyane said they had not spoken to the woman concerned.

“We have nothing to do with her, but with the people who account to us. So I see no need for us to speak to her,” he said.

On the alleged fake qualifications he said:   “If law enforcement agencies find any wrongdoing, the law must take its course. And where there is proof we will not be found wanting, we will act.”
