Final scrutiny for UDM poll lists

After shrugging off claims that he had defected to the ANC, former UDM provincial secretary Wandile Tsipa has made it onto the party’s King Sabata Dalindyebo (KSD) list at number three for the municipal elections.

Topping the KSD list is UDM councillor Mncedisi Bunzana and Mangqobe Junior Secondary School principal Mzimkhulu Mpangele.

Tshomane Traditional Council head Chief Bongani Dudumayo and Lennox Nolwandle are in first and second places on the party’s OR Tambo district list.

The rumour mill was in overdrive as to who made the various municipal lists following a meeting with leader Bantu Holomisa at the Garden Court Hotel in Mthatha on Tuesday.

Holomisa said the party’s National Executive Committee (NEC) would meet in Pretoria on Saturday to finalise the lists from all provinces before they were submitted to the IEC.

If the KSD list does not change Tsipa would be in line for the council speaker position if the UDM wins the August 3 local government elections.

Holomisa said the party hoped to make the lists public by Monday.

Earlier this month, UDM national bosses extended the deadline for KSD and OR Tambo districts to submit their electoral candidates after identifying discrepancies and queries in their initial lists.

The two structures were tasked with ironing out the discrepancies by May 14.

Holomisa said they were aware that lobby groups would try to dominate the respective lists.

“We have to take steps that will be justifiable to party members at all times.

“My objective is to always integrate the list so that it will be representative of UDM members.

“But according to my experience in politics, lists have never satisfied everyone.

“But if someone knows the UDM, they will see that the lists from KSD, Nyandeni, Mbhashe and other areas will be balanced.”

Tsipa’s inclusion on the list comes after he formally lodged a complaint to UDM national leaders about his name appearing on a list said to be of the ANC.

Tsipa said his name on the ruling party’s list was part of a political smear campaign meant to discredit him ahead of the UDM’s provincial list conference last month.

Asked about Tsipa, Holomisa said he was still a UDM member who was eligible for election to any position.

Tsipa declined to comment saying he had not yet seen the list. — ndamasem@dispatch.co.za
