A new music development programme in Duncan Village that will see 80 young people being exposed to musical instruments and vocal coaching was launched yesterday.

The Gompo Arts Festival (GAF) is the brainchild of East London-based HD Sounds and Music, an entertainment company that provides a variety of services such as studio recordings and events and artists management.

HD’s Vuyisa Solinjani said the main focus of GAF is on the musical training programme that will see young people who reside in and around Duncan Village being exposed to musical instruments and vocal coaching.

“The training will have a focus on instruments such as piano, drums, acoustic guitar, bass guitar and sound engineering and will run for three months from the February 8 till April 29,” said Solinjani. At the end of the training the students will showcase their craft at the festival.

He said they had recruited the help of popular local musicians Malibongwe Gwcabe and Asanda “Msaki” Mvana as mentors.

Sixty of the youngsters chosen are from schools around Duncan Village, while the other 20 are handpicked from the community.

The festival will be a three-day event starting on May 6, and will be held at the Gompo Arts Centre in Duncan Village. — ziphon@dispatch.co.za
