Mount Frere court sentences sex offenders to jail times

Three Eastern Cape men will spend time behind bars after being convicted by the Mount Frere regional court for sex crimes.

Phumlani Nyubuse‚ 25‚ was sentenced to 18 years in jail for rape‚ kidnapping and assault last Friday.

Police spokeswoman Lieutenant Edith Mjoko said Nyubuse was arrested in 2012 after he raped a 20-year-old woman in Xhobo village in the Cabazi administrative area.

"The victim was on her way home from a shop when she met the accused‚ who then grabbed her and raped her. He also assaulted her and kidnapped her."

In another incident‚ 40-year-old Zoleka Giwu was sentenced to two-years imprisonment for ill-treating a six-year-old child in Centuli village last year.

"The child met him and called him father‚ but he assaulted the minor and kicked him complaining that he was not the father‚" said Mjoko.

Giwu was arrested and charged with child ill-treatment.

Meanwhile‚ 20-year-old Wandile Chiliza was sentenced to three-years imprisonment for sexually assaulting a 45-year-old woman.

The incident happened at Phantsikwentaba village in the Mabobo administrative area in 2013.

"The victim was at home when the accused entered the house and demanded to sleep with her. He also assaulted the victim but she managed to escape and called for help‚" the spokeswoman said.

Chiliza was later arrested on charges of sexual assault.

Mjoko said it was hoped the sentences would serve as a deterrent to other would-be lawbreakers. – Daily Dispatch
