Police all out to wing it

The best are beginning to separate themselves from the rest as the club rugby season heads into its fifth weekend of action tomorrow.

The top teams in the Border Super League to date are looking to move ahead of the chasing pack.

Police, Old Selbornians and the Walter Sisulu University All Blacks remain the only unbeaten teams in the league so far and they will all be looking to keep that record intact, in what should be another entertaining weekend of rugby.

Police and Old Boys take on top Mdantsane sides Swallows and Winter Rose respectively, while the All Blacks travel to King William’s Town to take on Africans.

Top-of-the-table Police, who host Swallows at home, currently lead Old Boys and WSU by two points, thanks to having picked up more four-try bonus points so far.

Swallows currently sit fourth on the log and they will be eager to shake off the weekend’s controversy, in which their opponents, Winter Rose, lodged a protest after their massive derby that ended 11-all.

“I am not sure when the protest will be reviewed, but I hope in the next few weeks as we would like to get it sorted out as soon as possible,” Border head of club rugby Simphiwe Ntantala said.

Defending league champs Old Boys, who are in second place thanks to a bigger points difference, will also be playing at home this weekend.

They welcome Winter Rose to Mike Pendock Motors Park for their derby.

“We are happy with how the season has started, we had a long off-season after playing a lot of rugby last year, but we are starting to get into the thick of things and improve on each weekend’s result,” Old Boys coach David McCallum said.

Having racked up four consecutive wins and coming off a good 22-14 victory over rivals Buffaloes this past weekend, they will be gunning to maintain their good momentum going.

“It was nice coming up against a competitive Buffs team over the last weekend, we will take a win away at Buffs, and credit to them, they gave us a good fight,” McCallum admitted.

“The guys are excited for the game against Winter Rose.

“They won the league and went to club champs themselves a few years ago, so they are always a good side and tough challenge and we are looking forward to the match,” McCallum added.

The WSU All Blacks will be facing a tough test against Africans in King William’s Town and will need to be in good form to stay unbeaten.

Having beaten close university rivals Fort Hare in the last round, WSU will be full of confidence and will look to take that momentum into the game.

Africans themselves enjoyed a morale-boosting 7-3 win at Berlin Tigers and they will want to upset the high-flying Walter Sisulu University All Blacks.

In other matches Ocean Sweepers, who won their first match of the season against Cambridge last weekend, host Berlin Tigers who are yet to register a win, in Nxaruni.

The Fort Hare Blues welcome bottom-of-the-table Breakers to Alice for their match-up and Cambridge, who are also without a win so far, host Buffs at Hamiltons Sports Club.

All the matches kick off at 3.30pm tomorrow afternoon.
