VIDEO: Shoppers in ‘Black Friday’ frenzy

Shopping centres in East London were crowded yesterday as shoppers took advantage of “Black Friday” bargains.

The American consumer custom of slashing prices on the last Friday of November was first brought to South Africa by Checkers last year. This year more than a dozen stores including Pick n Pay, Toys-R-Us and Foschini joined in.

At Checkers in Balfour Park shopping centre in Vincent, some shoppers arrived very early. Nandi Ncitha said when she arrived at 5am there was already a crowd waiting for doors to open.

At Pick n Pay Hemingways there was a battle for trolleys. Mayleen Jacobs even followed a customer to her car to get her hands on a trolley. “The situation is bad but for a penny pincher like me I am willing to stick it out,” said Jacobs.

For most customers like Sharlene Rooney the day was an opportunity to save on Christmas gifts.

Rooney, who was at Toys-R-Us, bought a trolleyful of toys for her four grandchildren. “I got these items at half price; it is truly a bargain and such a relief that my gift shopping has been done,” said Rooney.
