Teen dies falling from cliff

A 13-year-old King William’s Town girl died yesterday after she slipped and fell off a 3m ledge near Port St Johns on Wednesday.

The teen was airlifted in a critical condition to the Nelson Mandela Central Hospital (NMCH) in Mthatha on Wednesday, but she died as a result of her injuries yesterday.

The spring water is used to treat a variety of ills from muscle sprains and skin ailments to inner cleansing.

The mud baths are said to be good for spiritual healing.

Hundreds of litres of water are drawn from the spring each month but reaching it is not easy as visitors have to scale a large rock face using a fig tree as an improvised staircase.

Port St Johns municipality mayor Mnyamezeli Mangqo, who has previously described Isinuka as a “sacred” source, yesterday reacted with shock at the news of Nasiphi’s death.

He expressed his condolences to her family, saying losing a loved one was never easy.

He urged local residents and visitors in Port St Johns to exercise caution.

“Whether it’s tourists or locals coming to our beaches or to Isinuka, we would like to urge them to observe the stipulated safety measures because they are there to ensure to their own safety,” said Mangqo. — sikhon@dispatch.co.za
