Top musicians to ring in new year

Festive season revellers are in for a treat this week when some of the country’s biggest names in entertainment make their way to East London for end-of-year celebrations.

Partygoers will be spoilt for choice between two events scheduled for Wednesday to ring in the New Year.

The first-ever Countdown Music Festival will be held at the Buffalo Park Cricket Stadium, and will feature the likes of Cassper Nyovest, Zakes Bantwini, DJ Tira, Bucie and the Jaziel Brothers.

Tickets cost R150 at Computicket, with the show starting at 6pm.

On the same day the Miller Fresh Year’s Eve music concert will take place at the Cambridge police park with a line-up headlined by Khuli Chana and PRO. It will also feature the likes of DJ PH and duo Major League DJs.

Tickets are R200 at Computicket and gates open at 5pm.

However, non-partygoers need not feel left out as East London will also host a gospel countdown show.

The Sinqobile Gospel Festival will be held at the Orient Theatre and will feature gospel greats such as Lusanda Mcinga and her Spiritual Group; the reigning 2014 Gospel Song of the Year winner Bethusile Mcinga, Dumi Mkokstad, Veliswa Skeyi, Khanyisa Sabuka, Phumla Mfene and many more.

Organiser Mfezie Mveku said that the ushering in of a New Year marks a break with the past and welcomes the beginning of a bright future and that this event was about joining in praise and worship to herald in the new year.

Musician Mcinga said he had performed in East London many times before but that this event was different.

“I chose to participate in this event because I wanted to be part of this new culture, where we invite God into our lives as the year starts.

“This event will be more of a praise and worship session because although we are entertainers we will be worshipping with our fans and calling on God to guide us in this new chapter.”

The festival starts at 7pm on New Year’s Eve and is billed to run to 6am on New Year’s Day.

Tickets are limited and cost R100 at Jet Music in King William’s Town, Zora Shop in Vincent Park and Good News Music Centre in Oxford Street.
