Electronic rap duo PHFAT, who recently returned from their second Australian tour, will be bringing their music to East London this weekend.

PHFAT is made up of Cape Town rappers Narch and Smooth Mike.

“We arrived from Australia on Sunday evening and we cannot wait for our Eastern Cape shows,” Mike said.

The two rappers enjoy a fan base across the world. They made their debut in 2010 when they opened for American hip-hop group Public Enemy at The Assembly in Cape Town.

After that performance, PHFAT went on to produce singles that saw them playing at various venues in Cape Town.

When describing their sound, Mike said it was homemade electronic rap music that people can party to. He said their influences ranged from punk to rap music.

Their biggest break came last year when their single, If he can’t dance, was featured on more than 10 radio stations around the country including 5FM, YFM and Good Hope FM. They also made their first Australian tour last year in June.

Mike said performing overseas was exciting and challenging at the same time.

“It’s like playing to a new audience; you have to introduce them to your music through the set. You can’t just start with the main tracks, you must slowly get into your tracks,” he said.

Mike said their Australian performances allowed them to interact differently with their audience.

“It’s not like being here in South Africa; you must teach the audience and that is a new skill that we have learned these past couple of months,” he said.

While in Australia PHFAT did an east coast tour. “The tour was awesome. We were there for about a month and we had 12 shows. We played at pubs and music festivals – it was fantastic,” Mike said.

He explained that for their Eastern Cape tour, they would perform in Port Alfred, Grahamstown and East London before heading back to Cape Town. He said people could look forward to a hip, electro show with lots of amazing tunes they have been working on since their last visit.

Catch PHFAT performing at Buccaneers this Saturday. Tickets, available at the door, cost R50 before 10pm and R80 after. — poliswap@ dispatchlive.co.za/
