Wits University applies for urgent interdict against protesters

Wits University will apply for an urgent High Court interdict to prevent any further disruptions during registration on Friday.

Wits University spokesperson Shirona Patel said the interdict would only be used if students were involved in further protests.

She said they had had to double their security because of protesting students.

On Monday, Wits Student Representative Council (SRC) disrupted onsite registration. They were demanding free registration for all academically qualified students. The university was then forced to suspend registration for two days.

Wits SRC secretary general Fasiha Hassan told News24 that students would be heading to the High Court in Johannesburg to object to the interdict.

Patel said registration would continue on Friday.
