Zimbane youths take RDP woes to Thuli

A group of youths from one of Mthatha’s newest suburbs has turned to the public protector to investigate allegations of RDP housing corruption.

They also want help with the removal of their ward councillor, whom they accuse of selling people’s houses illegally.

A crowd of about 20 placard-waving protesters, mostly youths from Zimbane Valley, marched the streets of Mthatha yesterday to hand a list of grievances to the public protector’s offices in Fort Gale suburb.

Spokesman Monde Sandlana told the Dispatch they wanted Thuli Madonsela to investigate corruption over RDP houses in Zimbane Valley. “There are many people who have come forward whose houses were sold illegally. Some of them only got erf numbers but never got to occupy the houses,” he said.

He said they would give the public protector a month to investigate their claims and table her findings.

The march comes only a month after youth from the area forwarded a petition to authorities at King Sabata Dalindyebo (KSD) municipality calling for the removal of Ward 4 councillor Nomzi Xhobani.

Xhobani, who denied the claims levelled against her earlier this year, could not be reached for comment yesterday.

Attempts to contact KSD were also unsuccessful at the time of writing.

Sandlana said the youths were not satisfied with the response from KSD.

“She together with her ward committee members must go. We won’t compromise on this one,” vowed Sandlana. — sikhon@dispatch.co.za
