Zuma to visit EC, launch R200m bulk water plan

President Jacob Zuma will jet into the province this weekend to launch a R200-million bulk water infrastructure programme in Cofimvaba on Friday.

Presidency spokesman Bongani Ngqulunga confirmed yesterday that Zuma would be at the Chris Hani district this week, “to launch the Ncorha multimillion (rand) bulk infrastructure programme which will service the surrounding areas”.

Provincial government spokesman Sizwe Kupelo said the project started in July 2012 and was due for completion in November 2013, “but due to the national strike and rain delays that target date was met early this year.

“It is now sitting at 87% in terms of completion,” said Kupelo.

He said this project aimed to eradicate water backlog in the Ncora area.

“Currently the villages under this cluster are serviced by surface water and boreholes which tend to be unreliable. The site is the area of Intsika Yethu local municipality,” Kupelo added.

The infrastructure will service lo-cal municipalities such as Intsika Yethu, Sakhisizwe and Ngcobo, home to 148 villages with a popula-tion of more than 133000 people.

The project includes the construction of water treatment works, two bulk pumping stations, three bulk reservoirs, 111km of connector supply lines, three service pumping stations, 15 service reservoirs as well as 96km of reticulation mains.

Water and sanitation minister Nomvula Mokonyane, as well as premier Phumulo Masualle and all members of his executive will accompany President Zuma.

Mokonyane’s spokesman Mlimandlela Ndamase said the invite to view the scheme and witness the bulk water infrastructure launch came via the Queenstown-based Chris Hani district municipality.

The Dispatch understands that a gala dinner to raise funds for the ruling party was also on the cards this weekend. But ANC national spokesman Zizi Kodwa told the Dispatch yesterday that “there is no finality at this stage on the hosting of a gala dinner”. — zineg@dispatch.co.za
