Mandla Makupula must go. His continued stay as education MEC is a threat not only to the future of thousands of rural schoolchildren of the Eastern Cape but also to the development of this province.

He deserves to be shown the door immediately, before he inflicts even more harm to our already crippled education system.

For as long as he is the MEC for education, our children will remain trapped in mud classrooms and will continue to share open fields with grazing livestock.

For a province as poor as ours, and with arguably the biggest infrastructure backlog in the country, it is inexcusable that Makupula’s department allowed for the R530-million grant to be re-allocated by the national Treasury.

The infrastructure needs of Eastern Cape schools far outweigh those in Gauteng and others. But we cannot blame the Treasury in this instance.

Ring-fenced funds like the infrastructure grant are allocated on a use-or-lose basis.

Makupula ought to have known this because last year he announced that the province would require R2-billion to build more than 48000 classrooms at 1140 schools.

Every day of the week, we continue to publish stories about schools in desperate need of infrastructure and the list grows by the day.

By keeping Makupula in his cabinet, premier Phumulo Masualle is undermining his own plans to improve this province’s education.

It makes a mockery of the so-called commitment to prioritising education. Through education we can halve the challenges we face as a province.

But for as long as Makupula remains MEC, that will remain a pipe dream. Makupula deserves an “F”.

He has failed dismally.
