Bulldogs to go for jugular in Cup opener

THE Border Bulldogs left for Durban yesterday where they face the Sharks in their opening Vodacom Cup fixture tomorrow afternoon.

The game is scheduled for a 4pm kick-off with the Bulldogs full of hope of of starting the new season with a win.

Speaking from Durban yesterday, head coach Paul Flanagan said while the Bulldogs had suffered a spate of injuries following their pre-season tour up north, he had nevertheless targeted the Sharks for a win.

Among the injured are new eighthman Spanner Pretorius of the Leopards and centre Chumani Booi who broke his wrist while on tour.

The Bulldogs have also welcomed former Dale College scrumhalf Shannon Riek plus flyhalf Carlo Aspeling, formerly of the Falcons.

“Unfortunately those injured were all first choices but we still have a side to beat the Sharks.

“I am happy with our preparation and the squad has been hard at work since October,’’ said Flanagan.

Of their three games on tour, the Bulldogs beat the Falcons, lost to the Lions by less than 10 points and thrashed newcomers to the Vodacom Cup, the Limpopo Bulls.
