Bulldogs to bare their teeth in Alice

THE Border Bulldogs have made only one change to the starting team that went down 22-13 to Western Province last weekend for their Vodacom Cup clash against Free State at the University of Fort Hare in Alice tomorrow.

An ankle injury to explosive winger Chrislyn van Schalkwyk will see Lolo Waka come in at left wing to accommodate the forced change.

Bulldogs head coach JP Immelman believes continuity is key at this stage of the competition and also looking at the team’s performance against Western Province.

“We’ve decided to stick with last weekend’s starting team because they played really well against Western Province with only one change on the wing,” said Immelman.

On the bench the Bulldogs have gone with a four-three forwards and backs split instead of the five-two split against Province.

Immelman reaffirmed they are expecting a lot of running rugby from Free State.

“The Cheetahs play quite a wide game of rugby and we’ve also got one or two players with niggling injuries in the backs so we didn’t want to take a chance and go with a five-two split.”

Former Selborne College flyhalf Dale Sabbagh comes in on the bench to make three backs while Ernst Ladendorf, who covers lock and flank, comes in place of lock Nomani Tonga who drops out of the match 22.

According to Immelman, Ladendorf’s pace and agility will be key at the breakdown point and around the fringes.

The Bulldogs will run through their last bit of preparations this afternoon with the captains run to fine-tune the smaller details.

With a lot of excitement surrounding tomorrow afternoon’s game, team captain Gareth Krause said they are taking things one step at a time.

“We are really looking forward to this weekend’s game after last weekend’s performance, but we are just taking things one step at a time ,” said Krause. The game kicks off at 3pm.
