Bucs out to blunt Stars

AFTER five consecutive league draws in the Absa Premiership, Orlando Pirates hope to get back to their winning ways at the expense of equally low flying Free State Stars tonight (Wed) at 7.30pm.

Scheduled for Charles Mopeli Stadium, the match promises to be an exciting one as Stars are also under pressure to win following indifferent results.

The two sides will also be minus some of their influential players for various reasons. Pirates have travelled to the Free State without Siyabonga Sangweni, Oupa Manyisa, Andile Jali and Thabo Matlaba due to an assortment of injuries.

Good news for The Ghost is that former Stars player, Mpho Makola, has been given the green light to feature in today’s game if he is selected to play by coach Roger de Sa.

Makola, who passed a late fitness test yesterday (Tuesday), had been was suffering from a groin injury.

As for Stars, Luyolo Nomandela, Enva Wiltver, Lehlohonolo Thebakang and Dove Wome are all out for this game due to suspension.

Despite the injury blues in their camp, Pirates assistant coach Tebogo Moloi said they needed a win to be in high spirits ahead of Saturday’s African Champions League game with TP Mazembe at Orlando Stadium.

“We are going there for a win, it won’t be an easy match because Stars have also not been doing that well since the start of this year. They will definitely be spitting fire.

“We promise our supporters that we won’t disappoint them this time round. For us to get a good crowd when we play TP Mazembe, we have to get a win to convince South Africans we are ready to face the team from DR Congo.”

Stars general manager Rantsi Mokoena said: “We are fighting hard to end the season in the top eight bracket, so Pirates must forget about getting even a single point.”

The spotlight will fall on veteran striker Benni McCarthy, who is expected to spearhead Pirates attack, which must be giving Stars’ goalie and captain Kennedy Mweene sleepless nights.

Midweek Premiership fixtures:

Today: Mamelodi Sundowns v University of Pretoria (Loftus Versfeld), Free State Stars v Orlando Pirates (Charles Mopeli Stadium), AmaZulu v Bloemfontein Celtic (Moses Mabhida Stadium), Wits v Platinum Stars (Bidvest Stadium), Maritzburg United v Golden Arrows (Harry Gwala Stadium), Chippa United v Moroka Swallows (Philippi Stadium).
