AmaRova look to their playmaker

BLACKBURN Rovers will rely heavily on playmaker Mazwi Mncube to dictate terms in the middle of the park when they host Santos in their National First Division clash on Saturday.

From this must-win encounter, Rovers will also be hoping to keep their unbeaten record at the Mthatha Stadium intact.

Since relocating from the Buffalo City Stadium, AmaR ova have notched up two wins and managed two draws from their four matches in Mthatha.

According to the 23-year-old Mncube, playing against the former Premier Soccer League team is motivation enough for the team.

“Playing one of the former PSL teams in the league is always enough motivation for the boys to go out there and play their hearts out.

“In this case, they are also in the top three in the league so even more reason for us to prove that we belong at the top of the log,” added the left-footed Mncube.

Following their promising start to the second half of the season, Rovers are looking to capitalise on the hard work and finish well.

Mondli Funani’s charges this year have managed to move from 13th position into the top half where they are currently placed ninth on the log.

AmaR ova have had to turn things around following a hefty January transfer window which has left them only a handful of senior players from last season.

According to Mncube, who is in his second season with Rovers, the team is starting to gel and the results are proof enough.

“Our mission it to make the playoffs and to do that, we’ve got to start winning our games and beat the ‘big teams’ whenever we come across them.

“We need to continue with the hard work and stay focused ... we all know what is needed of us and we planning on delivering.

“We had a lot of new players come into the team after the transfer period and there’s a lot of difference in the way we are playing now because we are starting to get used to each other and playing together,” he added.

Mncube, who is one of the leading goalscorers in the team with five goals, will also be hoping to add to his tally.

And while he didn’t score in Blackburn’s recent 2-0 win away to FC AK, Mncube was on the scoresheet when AmaRova held FC Cape Town to a 1-1 draw earlier this month.

And the midfielder was pleased with his form thus far this season.

“I’m really enjoying my game at the moment; I’m getting regular starts which means the coaching staff believes in me.

“And the fact that I’ve been scoring goals regularly and contributing to the team means I’m improving and doing well,” said Mncube.

Mncube will definitely be the man to watch for Ian Palmer and his team come 6pm on Saturday night.
