Emerging SA cricketers on bigger stage

THE SA Emerging cricket side leaves for Namibia today with one objective in mind: to give the “future Proteas” an opportunity to showcase their talent at a higher level than the domestic provincial cricket they have been playing this past season.

A group of 14 prospects will take part in a quadrangular Twenty20 tournament against hosts Namibia, Kenya and the Netherlands. The tournament starts tomorrow and ends on Wednesday.

Coach Geoffrey Toyana has been putting the side through their paces ahead of the tournament since Wednesday at the High Performance Centre in Pretoria.

“This is a great opportunity for me and the boys. The main objective for me going to Namibia is to give all the young boys in the squad an opportunity. I’ve told them everyone will get an opportunity to play. All the sides we will be playing have played in the World Cup, so we can’t go there underestimating them,” the domestic T20- winning coach said yesterday.

“It’s a great young side. Everyone here has done superbly at their franchises this past season. It’s a good young team and I’m looking forward to seeing them enjoying themselves on tour and expressing their skills.”

Toyana praised the members of his squad for an impressive season, adding great things can be expected from them at the quadrangular tournament.

Among the troops who will do duty are the Warriors trio of Andrew Birch, who has been one of the season’s peak bowlers, all-rounder Aya Gqamane, who has had a superb season in all three formats of the game, and Christiaan Jonker, who has proven to be a dangerous batsman in the T20 format.

Titans wicketkeeper Mangaliso Mosehle is another to look out for.

The tournament will also help in showcasing the talent of black African players.

“This is a great opportunity for guys like Khaya (Zondo), who has not played much at the Dolphins, to get a chance.

“I have four black African players (Gqamane, Zondo, Mosehle and Malusi Siboto) and they are in this team on merit – just look at their performances over the past 18 months at their provinces,” said Toyana.

Lions player Jean Symes, the captain, said the side is not going to the tournament just to make up numbers, but will be fighting, as a team, to win.

The team is: Jean Symes (capt), Andrew Birch, Cameron Delport, Aya Gqamane, Beuran Hendricks, Christiaan Jonker, Keshav Maharaj, Mangaliso Mosehle, Dane Piedt, Dwaine Pretorius, Malusi Siboto, Yaseen Vallie, David Wiese, Khaya Zondo
