It’s boxing firestorm

RENOWNED for putting together gigantic tournaments without television backing, Mamali Promotions (MP) will be back this weekend when they organise a show at the Mdantsane Indoor Centre to celebrate Mdantsane’s 50th anniversary.

The tournament is set to surpass any show the promotional company has ever organised, although their November 2008 tournament featuring three world title bouts is still by far the biggest event.

WBA Pan African junior-featherweight champion Tshifhiwa Munyai will take on Mdantsane-born Johannesburg-based Phumzile Matyhila.

Munyai was forced to work hard for his 11 rounds stoppage victory over Ghananian Emmanuel Quartey in Cathcart this past June.

The amount of punishment Munyai took from the fight prompted Boxing SA to suspend him from fighting for some time.

He will be making his return to the ring since the suspension.

Matyhila, who represented the country at the 2000 Sydney Olympics, has never really translated his amateur success to the professionals, with WBC International and SA titles his only achievements.

He lost his SA bantamweight crown to unheralded Toto Helebe, and forfeited his WBC international junior-flyweight on the scales when he could not make the required weight limit.

Other title fights involve SA super-middleweight Balemo Weliya defending against Masixole Botile, and the vacant SA junior-featherweight battle between Siviwe Hasheni against Capetonian Lwandile Gugushe.
