Swallows fly above United

MOROKA Swallows flew away with maximum points after ending SuperSport United’s Absa Premiership unbeaten run, winning the game 2-1 last night at a match played at Lucas Moripe Stadium.

Swallows were the first to draw blood through striker Edward Manqele whose ground shot found SuperSport goalkeeper Ronwen Williams in slumberland in the eighth minute.

United made all efforts to fight back. They controlled possession and made several visits to Craig Etafia’s goal area in search of an elusive equaliser.

Former Swallows star Bennet Chenene squandered one of the easiest scoring opportunities of the night by failing to tap in a well taken corner kick by David Mathebula in the 25th minute.

Swallows went further 2-0 in the lead when Siyabonga Nomvethe made no mistake from Lerato Chabangu’s corner kick.

Edwin Gyimah pulled one back for United in the 75th minute from Thuso Phala’s corner kick.

  • At Orlando Stadium, it was a little unconvincing and somewhat laboured, but Orlando Pirates will be grateful for a belated first win of the 2013-14 Absa Premiership, 1-0 against early-season whipping boys Polokwane City.

Centre-back Rooi Mahamutsa popped up outside the Polokwane area for a 62nd-minute winning strike.

This was a trickier encounter than it appeared for Pirates. They came into it on the back of their wobble in the CAF Champions League, where back-to-back defeats away against Zamalek and AC Leopards have left Bucs needing a home win against Al Ahly on Sunday to reach the semi-finals.

Polokwane’s fifth loss from five, though all by a one-goal margin, continued a disastrous start in a league that promises to be super-competitive this season.

  •  Free State Stars scored early in the first half and held off a relentless charge from Golden Arrows in the second period, as the visitors bagged a

1-0 Premiership victory in Umlazi, outside Durban, last night.

Ghanaian striker Adam Abdul-Basit netted the first real attempt of the game, banging in a header in the ninth minute to give Stars the early advantage.

Fighting back in search of the equaliser, the hosts came close seven minutes later when Philani Shange delivered a free kick, but Vuyisile Ntombayithethi’s header sailed over the crossbar.

  •  Platinum Stars remain unbeaten in the Premiership this season after beating University of Pretoria 1-0 at Royal Bafokeng Stadium, thanks to a 45th minute strike from on-form forward Siphelele Mthembu.

  • Two goals in the opening seven minutes by Ayanda Nkosi and Mario Booysen allowed Maritzburg United to hold a comfortable 2-0 win over
