Baxter weighs Chiefs offer of two more years at Naturena

KAIZER Chiefs yesterday offered coach Stuart Baxter a two-year extension to his contract, which the Englishman is expected to sign today.

The Amakhosi management, Baxter and his agent Steve Kapeluschnik met yesterday and all but agreed terms for the coach to continue at the helm.

“And our mandate is still quite simple. At Chiefs we want to win trophies,” said club football manager Bobby Motaung.

“We are still also keen to see him work with our development and doing pretty much what he has been doing since he arrived here last season.”

Baxter won the Absa Premiership and Nedbank Cup in his first year with the Glamour Boys after the side had gone almost eight years without winning a league title. Chiefs’ last premiership trophy had come under Romanian Ted Dumitru in 2005.

A new two-year deal means Baxter’s detractors are unlikely to see the coach shown the door under any circumstances this year, with Chiefs currently lying second behind Mamelodi Sundowns on the Premier League standings after 11 matches.

“He’s agreed to the new contract in principle, but we will meet again to formalise everything on Thursday before lunchtime,” said Motaung.

Baxter arrived at Chiefs in June 2012 to replace volatile Serbian mentor Vladimir Vermezovic, who had been sacked two months earlier with seven league games still to be played.

Motaung reiterated that the Naturenabased outfit were looking for consistency in the coaching department by extending Baxter’s stay. The coach’s main challenge is to resurrect the club’s youth academy, which has been closed down since 2010 because of an age-cheating scandal.

Chiefs are also looking to emulate Soweto rivals Orlando Pirates in the Caf Champions League after the Buccaneers reached the final, only to lose to Egyptian side Al Ahly over two legs. Chiefs’ African safari begins in February. And to that end, Amakhosi are hoping to bring in their first signing for the new year in Ajax Cape Town attacking midfielder Lebogang Manyama.

“We have concluded talks with his club and it is now up to him to agree to terms. The offer we have tabled is a three-year contract, but he is having a look at it with his agent, Maimane Phiri, and will get back to us at the latest on Friday,” said Motaung.

Manyama, 23, has made six Bafana appearances and was a key part in national team coach Gordon Igesund’s Cosafa Cup squad that finished third in Zambia in July. This season, although not a striker, Manyama is Ajax’s top scorer with four goals from 12 Premier League matches.
